Excerpt

“Oh, look! The gladiators are up
next! You should hear the buzz among the women, about the two brothers
from Sudania. They are quite the swordsmen, if you know what I mean.”
Her arch expression made me look at her a little more closely.
“Really?”
Before I could pursue this line of inquiry, fighters entered the arena
and I became distracted, too busy admiring their oiled muscles and
strutting bodies to start up a gossip session. As a rule, I understand,
gladiators are a vain and rutting lot, but oh, are they gorgeous!
The southern brothers led the second round. From the moment they stepped
forward, they dominated the arena. They moved with confidence and a
charismatic quality that kept all eyes on them. Their peers and
opponents paled in comparison. My pulse quickened and I could not tear
my attention away, even when Tilda touched my elbow.
I could understand the excitement generated by their bouts in the ring,
for they were in truly excellent shape. Not overdeveloped, as some
bodies in the arena appear, but balanced and fluid in their movements. I
admired their tanned skin and what looked to be strong profiles,
although their faces were mostly hidden by their half-helmets.
Dark hair flowed down their backs, worn longer than is customary in the
ring—especially as they favored trident and net as weapons. Those permit
the wielder to capture his opponent’s weapon and render it useless, then
move in to grapple hand to hand. Close fighting can be dangerous with
long hair, as it gives an opponent something to grip. Flexible as eels,
the brothers eluded every attempt to hold them and won the ensuing
wrestling matches in short order.
Flowers and coins showered into the arena as the crowd awarded them the
victories. They had mastered what I call the “winning strut”, the
victory lap that every winner takes around the arena, to cheers and
catcalls.
When they turned to acknowledge the Emperor and removed their helmets,
my breath caught in my chest.
